Delta Air Lines announced Tuesday a sweeping agreement with Amazon Leo — the satellite internet division formerly known as Project Kuiper — to bring next-generation in-flight WiFi to hundreds of aircraft. The deal marks a significant escalation in the battle for airborne connectivity, pitting Amazon directly against SpaceX’s Starlink, which has already locked in partnerships with more than 20 airlines worldwide.

Under the multi-year agreement, Delta will begin equipping 500 aircraft with Amazon Leo hardware starting in 2028. Each plane will carry a purpose-built phased array antenna capable of download speeds up to 1 Gbps and upload speeds up to 400 Mbps — a dramatic leap over Delta’s current Viasat and Hughes-powered systems. The service will remain free for all Delta SkyMiles members, continuing the airline’s existing partnership with T-Mobile on complimentary connectivity.

The Technology Behind the Deal

Amazon Leo operates a growing constellation of low Earth orbit satellites circling approximately 370 miles above the planet’s surface. The system currently has authorization for 3,236 satellites, with the FCC approving an additional 4,500 in January 2026 — bringing the planned total to 7,727. The satellites communicate with each other using optical inter-satellite links capable of transferring data at up to 100 Gbps via infrared lasers.

Ed Bastian, Delta’s chief executive officer, framed the partnership as a natural extension of the airline’s existing relationship with Amazon Web Services. “This agreement gives us the fastest and most cost-effective technology available to better connect the world today,” Bastian said. “It deepens our work with a global leader that shares our ambition to build what’s next.” He added that the new system would deliver speeds two to four times faster than Delta’s current in-flight WiFi.

Andy Jassy, Amazon’s chief executive, signaled the company’s long-term commitment to the satellite venture. “We’re gonna invest whatever’s required to build an amazing low Earth orbit satellite constellation that has incredible performance at low cost,” Jassy said, adding that both companies plan to leverage their respective capabilities to “make an incredible experience for Delta customers.”

A Crowded Sky

Delta’s choice of Amazon Leo comes as SpaceX’s Starlink has built a commanding lead in aviation connectivity. More than 20 airlines have signed Starlink agreements as of early 2026, including some of the world’s largest carriers. United Airlines has already installed Starlink on over 300 aircraft and expects to reach 800 by year-end. Southwest Airlines is equipping more than 300 jets by the end of 2026. IAG — the parent company of British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus — committed to outfitting over 500 aircraft. The Lufthansa Group plans to roll Starlink across its entire 850-plus aircraft fleet starting in the second half of 2026.

Amazon Leo’s airline portfolio is far smaller but growing. JetBlue became the first airline to sign with the service in September 2025, agreeing to equip roughly a quarter of its fleet by 2028 with a rollout beginning in 2027. The Delta deal significantly expands Amazon’s aviation footprint and adds a major legacy carrier to its roster.

Legacy providers face a shifting landscape. Gogo sold its commercial aviation business to Intelsat for $400 million in 2020 and now focuses on business aviation. Intelsat was later acquired by SES. Panasonic Avionics and Viasat remain active, but momentum has swung toward low Earth orbit systems offering lower latency than older geostationary satellites.
